Engineering a consent sandbox to eliminate annoying pop-ups and dark patterns

Popups are an annoying ghost of internet history that just can’t seem to stay dead. At PEPR 2021, I spoke about the path Transcend’s engineering team took to find a way to eliminate pop-ups while maintaining regulatory compliance.

In the talk, I shared our experience exploring various alternatives and how we designed a way for users to land on a website without a banner, while retaining tracking events locally on the user’s device—until an appropriate time to ask for user consent and release the events to the site owner.
